DDR SDRAM Information

Desktop DDR

Form Factor

DDR is built in many different ways and may not always look exactly like the photo above. This means the IC chips (the black rectangles) may be a different size or shape or arranged differently. The main thing to look for is the notches, length (5.25") and height (1.37"). The length will always be 5.25 but some machines may require a shorter height than 1.37". Again, this is yet another reason to use our configurator.

Pin Count

Desktop DDR has 184 pins with 1 notch. It shouldn't be confused with SDRAM which has 168 pins and 2 notches. If you need help finding the correct RAM, see our configurator to start the process of getting 100% compatible RAM with free shipping included!

Laptop DDR

Form Factor

DDR is built in many different ways and may not always look exactly like the photo above. This means the IC chips (the black rectangles) may be a different size or shape or arranged differently. The main thing to look for is the notches, length (2.62") and height (1"). The length will always be 2.62" but some machines may require a shorter height than 1", also called "Low Profile". This is yet another reason to use our configurator. We take the confusion out of upgrading your computer memory!

Pin Count

Laptop DDR has 200 pins with 1 notch. It shouldn't be confused with laptop SDRAM which has 144 pins and 1 notch more toward the center. If you need help finding the correct RAM, see our configurator to start the process of getting 100% compatible RAM with free shipping included!

More Technical Details

Short for Double Data Rate-Synchronous DRAM, a type of SDRAM that supports data transfers on both edges of each clock cycle (the rising and falling edges), effectively doubling the memory chip's data throughput. DDR-SDRAM also consumes less power, which makes it well-suited to notebook computers.
