Double Data Rate Random Access Memory or DDR RAM is twice as fast as SDRAM. Current standards for this type of memory are PC200 (PC1600) and PC266 (PC 2100). They are mostly known by the name in parenthesis because they transfer data at speeds of 1600 and 2100 (respectively)MB per second.

DDR RAM for Less Heat, Better Battery

Because Double Data Rate (DDR RAM) takes less power the amount of heat within the system is reduced and the battery life in portable devices such as lap tops and notebooks is extended. This type of DRAM may also replace SDRAM as the physical dimensions and power requirements are the same. Supply and demand is the name of this game. As the demand grows for this product, it is supplied-at a lower price.

Due to that speed, this memory is used in PCs, notebooks, servers and as a platform for networking. It is also used for business and entertainment applications, but made and tested without great monetary investments. For the year 2002, DDR RAM served over 50% of the memory market.
