Memory Card Types

Memory cards are electronic flash memory data storage devices, commonly used in many small electronic devices, such as digital cameras, mobile phones, portable media players and even in some video game consoles. Their small size and now impressive storage capacity make them very popular.

There are lots of memory card types, as the different manufacturers on the market tried to implement their own type of memory card in some specific products. Over the years, miniaturization gave birth to even more memory cards, every manufacturer trying to develop smaller versions of its trademark product.

Some of the most common types of memory cards include PCMCIA-Personal Computer Memory Card International Association, with three versions (type I, II and III), Compact Flash (CF) cards (type I and type II) and Secure Digital (SD) cards, that also feature a MiniSD and a MicroSD version (the smallest memory card on the market). We can add to the list the Sony Memory Sticks, SmartMedia cards and xD-Picture card.

As we were saying, these memory card types are usually associated with a specific series of products, and you won’t find a Sony Memory Stick in a product that was not manufactured by Sony. Nevertheless, you can identify some trends in the market and today, microSD cards range among the most popular formats on the market.
