If your computer is running slow you have several options: You can buy a new computer, but that may cost you hundreds, if not thousands of dollars. Here are ten things you can do to help speed your current computer up!

Update Your Anti-Virus Software

One reason your computer could be running sluggishly is the myriad of viruses that can quietly infect your computer.  You may think that if you have a virus, you'd know it but most viruses are so effective because they quietly steal some of your computers bandwidth without affecting regular use!  By installing or updating anti-virus software, you can spot any potential threats and remove them from your computer.

Adding More Ram

By adding more RAM (Random Access Memory) you allow the computer to operate more programs faster. If your computer is sluggish, more RAM can greatly increase your desktop or laptops speed. It is one of the easiest upgrades that can be done on a computer and usually only takes between 5 to 10 minutes to install - no expertise required!   You might be asking yourself, How much RAM do I need? Remove Dust From Your Computer

Be careful when removing dust from the inside of your computer tower! Use compressed air to blow it out & a vacuum to get the loose clumps as they fall out. Never use a vacuum to clean out a computer, as it will cause electrostatic buildup, which can damage your components.  Only use compressed air for the computer, and vacuum for the area the computer is in. Another recommended procedure would be to get a dust cover for your 80mm and 120mm fans. This helps prevent dust and dirt from entering the desktop.

Upgrade Cooling Fans

By upgrading your computers cooling fans, you can keep your system from getting too hot and overheating. A cooler computer also runs more efficiently. This is a relatively cheap upgrade that can ensure your PC is running at optimal temperature. If you want to take this a step farther, you can actually custom mod your computer tower to make it run cooler! Check out our how to modify a computer case article.

Run A Disk Defragment

By running a disk defragmenter, your data is rearranged so your computer runs more efficiently without affecting where you saved your files! You can even have a set schedule for when this program will run on your computer.

Run A Disk Clean Up

Disk Cleanup (cleanmgr.exe) is a PC upkeep utility included in Microsoft Windows intended to free up circle space on a PC's hard commute. The utility first inquires and dissects the hard commute for records that are no more of any utilization, and afterward evacuates the pointless documents.

Uninstall Programs

All computers come with programs that are rarely ever used. You can uninstall these programs to free up some extra memory and help your computer run a bit faster. Just make sure not to delete anything important like driver updates!

Install A Solid State Drive

While these can be a bit more on the expensive side, they can greatly reduce your computers' load time.

Install A Larger Hard Drive

How often do you check your hard drive space to see how much room you have left to save files and install programs? It seems like those drives fill up quick, between the pictures, videos, and music that we all love to add on a daily basis. If you're in need of more hard drive space or just want a way to back up your priceless files, you can do a few different things to remedy the situation: You can get a bigger hard drive to replace your current one. You can get a second hard drive if your computer has a second slot. You can get an external hard drive that you simply hook to your computer and transfer your files. In any case, it's fast, easy and your files are safe!
